Uh, no. Remember this photo of Republicans ready to go to conference during the government shutdown? Something Democrats had been trying to get them to do since April?
Well sir, the shutdown ended on October 17, the first meeting of the budget conference committee was yesterday, and what was accomplished? They decided to meet again on November 13, just one month from the December 13 deadline for reaching an agreement. No need to rush, take a couple weeks off.
One thing that did come out of yesterday’s meeting. Paul Ryan took any increase in revenue off the table:
“House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) responded, “if this conference becomes an argument about taxes, we’re not going to get anywhere.”
…Ryan said tax hikes are a nonstarter for his side.
“The way to raise revenue is to grow the economy. We need to write a tax code that encourages economic growth, not stifles it,” he said.
“A tax code that encourages economic growth.” Ryan-speak for more tax cuts for the top 1%. Trickle down by any other name still stinks, and still doesn’t work.
What do I expect to come from these negotiations? Nothing.
